Fava beans for dinner?
Now that I am a SAHM, I have started spending more time in the kitchen. I cook almost every dinner for my family and….(here’s the odd part)….I enjoy it.
Before I had a baby, back when I was working full-time, I avoided the kitchen as much as possible. When I did try to put something together I felt like I always messed up the recipe, bit off more than I could chew and in general walked away feeling frustrated. What I didn’t realize then but what I know now is that cooking is a skill. And like most things in life it improves with practice.
I also think that now that I have the time to plan out family dinners & get to the store regularly cooking is not such a challenge.
The one piece of the cooking puzzle that I still find challenging is coming up with new recipes. Especially those that I can share with my daughter & ones that don’t require too much kitchen know-how. Luckily there are some great sites out there that offer recipes, restaurants & general foodie fun.
One of those, is a San Francisco blog run by two women, Stacie & Simran, called A Little Yumminess. This blog chronicles Stacie & Simran’s experiences as moms pursuing a passion for eating and cooking & sharing food adventures with their kids. The recipes they compile use fresh ingredients, make delicious foods but are not time intensive (they have kids, people!)
If I can make some of their recipes, trust me, you can too. About 3 weeks ago, our CSA delivered fava beans. As a vegetarian, I rely on beans for a significant portion of my protein. But when the fava beans arrived I was clueless as to what to do with them. Can anything tasty be made from fava beans? A Little Yum’s answer was “yes”. That night I made Fava Bean Crostini which was absolutely delicious. This is a recipe I will come back to in the future & when my daughter is a little older she can help in the preparation.
If you need more inspiration for dinner tonight there’s a blogroll with links to some of their favorite blogs for even more recipe ideas. In addition, and especially relevant for playplanit moms, they showcase local events in the foodie world, like this recent blog post on upcoming food happenings.

WOW! Great post. I'm always looking for inspiration and especially kid-friendly foods. Another great site is weelicious.com. I'm pretty sure the author is LA-based, but the site is a great source for baby foods, toddler foods and kid-friendly foods. Bon apetit! | Wed, 07/28/2010 - 11:33am |
